BBG Review: Is it really worth it?

I’m sure by now you’ve heard of the very popular workout by fitness instagrammer/personal trainer Kayla Itsines. She started a global movement a few weeks back having her entire following start the workout together on the same day. I too have been taking part and am currently on week 9. Kayla has an app that is compatible with Apple Watch as well as books you can buy to follow the workout plan…but is it really worth it?

First of all what is it?: Basically the plan follows three strength training days and three low intensity cardio days (LISS). On the strength training days you run through two different circuits of four different moves which you do as many of as you can for 7 minutes. You do each circuit twice. So basically it’s a 28 minute long workout (if you don’t include the breaks). LISS is a form of cardio you can do on a treadmill, eliptical, bike, etc. Kayla herself recommends walking or walking on a treadmill for the best results. You should maintain a steady heart rate in your “cardio burn” ratio (you can use a fitness tracker or online calculator to figure out where this is for you) and go for about 45 minutes.

The cost: This is what everyone always wants to know! To download the app and follow the planner it will cost you about $5 a month for the duration that you use it. A lot of people prefer this because it’s easier and everything you need to access your workout of the day is right there. The other option is downloading the eBook. The eBook is about $72CAD for just the workouts (per version as there are now two). If you also want to follow her meal plan it will bump it up to $122CAD. You can totally do these workouts at home but the farther you progress the more equipment you will need…so lets be honest…you’ll probably need a gym membership too.

So is it worth it? This is the real question! I opted to download the book because to me it was less of a commitment than having money taken out of my bank account every week. Also, I now have the PDF and can do the program as many times as I’d like too. I also don’t follow the food plan as I have my own food plan that I try and stick to.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been giving this my 100%. I try to put my all into the workouts but sometimes modify it if I’m not feeling up to it. The last little while I haven’t been eating the best either…but guess what? I’m still seeing results. I’ve never been able to see my abs as much as I have since starting this workout, even with the candy I’ve been chowing down on. I have noticed a difference in my waist especially. I’m down an inch and a half in my waist and I’m only on week 9. I feel slimmer and stronger and I actually really love this program. To me it is completely worth it to feel more confident in my own body and to feel victorious as I complete workouts that seem so scary when you first start. This program is hard, it’s easy to want to give up, but if you stick to it to the best of your ability you’re sure to see results.

The other thing I love about this program is the community. Go on Instagram and search #bbgcommunity and see for yourself. Millions of women are supporting each other and lifting each other up. This is how it should be! There are also a number of Facebook groups you can join to hold you accountable and to reach out to if you have any questions or concerns.

All of this is of course my opinion. You might think it’s ridiculous to spend $72 on a eBook but that’s totally up to you. I’ve already downloaded BBG 2.0 that I am looking forward to starting after this round is complete. Anyone else currently doing BBG? If you are let me know! I love chatting with you BBG ladies! <3

Christmas

Sorry for the terrible quality photo in this one but I was way too busy having fun with friends and family to actually take decent pictures. I hope you guys all had a wonderful Christmas (if you celebrate) as well!

Scott and I hung out with his family Christmas Eve and had breakfast with them in the morning. We then drove to my grandparents house for Christmas Day dinner. It was so great to see my family and we had such a fun day.

Rory had a blast running through all of the wrapping paper (as he does) and got a ton of treats. One of the highlights was telling Scott’s mom she was getting a puppy (who happens to be Rory’s brother).

So tell me what you did for the holiday’s and what your plans are for New Years!

xoxo

Tape In Hair Extensions: Why I’ll Never Do It Again

sarahscott_055

I just want to start by saying this is just my opinion. I’m sure other people have different experiences with tape-in extensions. My experience however was not great.

The girl that did my extensions was wonderful, the quality of the extensions were great, I just didn’t love them. When they were installed they still had a thin coat on them that made them smooth and shiny. The colour and cut matched wonderfully and I loved them.

When I showered a couple times the coating came off (like she told me it would) and I found I didn’t like the texture quite as much and the colour was now slightly different than the rest of my hair colour.

I only had them installed to have longer, fuller hair for my wedding and it certainly did it’s job. But after that I started to get frustrated with the upkeep. Every night after I showered (with special sulfate-free shampoo) I had to completely blow dry my hair (which takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r with this amount of hair), and braid it loosly to keep it from tangling. And oh the tangling! I found the extensions tangled with my natural hair during my day to day and caused me to have to spend a lot of time detangling it at night.

While honeymooning in Mexico I actually pulled an extension out trying to gently detangle my hair. You aren’t supposed to get the bonds wet because if water gets in between them they will separate. That’s very hard while on vacation and I came out of the pool with one of the pieces of tape sticking out. In Mexico I had begun getting frustrated with them because every time I got out of the pool I’d have to run back to the room to try and blow dry my hair. If I showered after we were done in the pool for the day I’d have to blow dry it again. The sun also lightened my natural hair so the extensions were starting to become very noticeable.

When I got home from Mexico I decided I didn’t want to pay a salon to take the extensions out because at this point three were already and a couple of them were hanging on by threads. I googled a few options and saw Moroccon oil would break the bonds. It took about half an hour but I managed to get them all out. There was a ton of glue residue in my hair afterwards however. I went to Sally’s Beauty Supply and bought something that was supposed to remove the glue. It did help a little but didn’t take it out like I hoped it would. I had these giant mats of glue and hair in my scalp that were so awful and impossible to get out.

It’s been about a month since then and I still have a little residue in my hair. It’s pretty much all gone now though. I don’t think I would get tape in extensions again. Clip-ins just make so much more sense for my lifestyle (read: I’m lazy) because they come out at night, can be washed separately and don’t have to be constantly blow dried. So it may work for some of you, if you’re okay with all the upkeep, but I just thought I’d make you aware of how much work they really are!

Review: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick

IMG_5386_EditIMG_5388_EditIMG_5389_EditIMG_5347_EditIMG_5392_Edit

Last weekend I stopped by Sephora armed with a gift card from Christmas I had been saving. It’s no secret I read a lot of make up reviews and tutorials so I had a few products in mind I wanted to try. Number one on my list was Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick because I have heard so many good things about it.

I was slightly disappointed by the selection my local Sephora had on hand because Stila has so many colours and I only had four to choose from. I decided on “Amalfi” which is a bright coral pink. The colour is a little intimidating in the tube because it’s super vibrant. I’m not usually a vibrant lipstick kind of person, but with spring coming I wanted to give it a try!

So I’m not going to lie, it took me a couple tried to figure out how to apply this product properly. The first time I slathered it on and smudged it as it was drying. This made it hard to get off my actual face and the lipstick looked uneven.

The best way to apply it is to put on a lip balm first (I like EOS), give it a couple seconds to sink in and then apply a small amount of lipstick to the center of your bottom lip and rub them together. This should distribute the product evenly though you will likely have to blend from the center outwards to the corners of your lips. I also found applying a lipliner after the lipstick really cleans up the overall look.

I’ve tested this lipstick for a few days now while I’m at work for 8 hours. Stila claims it will last for 6 hours and I would agree with that. It holds up fairly well against eating and drinking (which is super impressive), but by the end of the day I usually have a sort of ombre thing going on in which it’s faded from where my lips meet but still looks okay towards the edge of my lips. I’m not upset about this as a quick swipe of moisturizer blends it and allows you to look normal until you can reapply or remove it. I’d say this is an amazing lipstick for going out as you’ll be sure to look great all night.

Overall this is the most impressed I’ve been with a lipstick that claims to “stay all day” most of them only last a couple hours at most. If you’re looking into this I’d suggest ordering online if you don’t see a colour you like in store.

Thanks for reading,

xoxo, Sarah

10 Things to do in NYC for New Years Eve

NYC_TimeSquare

It’s almost been a year since my feet hit the pavement of one of my favourite cities in the world. New York City. I have been to the city four times in my life and every time I see a picture of it my heart aches to go back. There is so much to do and see that it truly is the city that never sleeps.

Last year my boyfriend and I went for a few days after Christmas and to experience New Years Eve in NYC. Everything about it was amazing (especially when my boyfriend proposed New Years day in Central Park…which is a story for another time).
NYC_CentralPark

So what should you do if you find yourself in New York City for the Christmas season? I’m here to break down my favourite things we did during my last time there!

1. Fifth Avenue Windows
NYC_5thAvenue

As you can see by the lines out front, the windows of Fifth Avenue are a thing to see! The artists that create them must have the worlds biggest imaginations! Last years theme was fairytales and it was incredible to see the different takes on the classics.

2. The Tree at Rockerfeller Center
NYC_Rockerfeller
This one’s a given right? It would be crazy to be in New York City at the same time as this tree and not go see it! The tree is even bigger than you imagine it from seeing it on TV and it worth seeing in the day time as well as the evening.

3. Macy’s
NYC_Macys
Shopper or not you should go to Macy’s. They always have it done up so nicely for Christmas, it was featured in Miracle on 34th Street, and they have the biggest most watched parade of the year! That should be reason enough but if not it’s one of the biggest stores in the world!

4. Radio City Music Hall
NYC_RadioCity
There have been so many amazing performances held here that it should be on your list to see while you’re in the area!

5. The Rockerfeller Center
NYC_Sunset NYC_EmpireState NYC_EmpireStateBuilding
Everyone has a different opinion on which building you should go to the top of (Empire State Building or Rockerfeller Center), but I went with Rockerfeller. My deciding factor was that I wanted to see the Empire State Building and Central Park from above. If you do the Empire State the Rockerfeller Center is in the way of Central Park. I would also suggest going in the afternoon, this way (if you want to hang out long enough) you can see the city during the day, sunset and at night!

6. Central Park
NYC_CentralPark_BirdsEye

Central Park is by far my favourite part of the city. I’m a runner, so I dream about living there and heading to the park for a morning run. It is also so cool to have nature planted perfectly in the middle of a huge bustling city. If you want to get away for awhile, this is the place to be. In the summer they have little free book libraries where you can grab a book to read in the park and return it when you’re done!

7. St. Patrick’s Cathedral
NewYorkCity

I just love this church! It’s so beautiful and has so much history. If you love architecture then check it out!

8. Freedom Tower / 9. 9/11 Memorial
NYC_FreedomTower
Speaking of history, the new Freedom Tower, Memorial Pools and 9/11 Museum should be on every travellers list. The Freedom Tower is so big, beautiful and I love what it stands for. The 9/11 Museum and Memorial Pools will really amaze you and put the terrible events of September 11th in perspective. You can get up close to pieces of the tower and learn about all the people affected by this tragedy.

10. Time Square/New Years Eve Ball Drop

NYC_NYE

(Image from livestream.com)

Ah yes…Time Square. The busiest place in the city no matter what time it is. The ball drop was really fun, but also really strange. They gated off every block and filled each ‘pen’ with people. Once that pen was full they would start filling the one behind it. My fiancé and I went early in the day and expected to be there all day, however we didn’t think of one thing! The police officer directing traffic informed us that once you’re in you can’t leave! Not even for the bathroom! He then told us the people that are there all day actually wear diapers so that they won’t lose their place! We weren’t having any of that and went to do something else for the day and returned closer to 10 for the actual festivities! We were blocks and blocks and blocks away but you could still see everything and it saved us from freezing/having to pee in a diaper.

There are of course so many other things to do and see in the city that never sleeps, but this is what I got up to last time. Let me know what your favourite parts of the city are if you’ve been and if not what parts of the city would you like to see?
